Though Baby the cow lost her eyesight she was able to find her way and have a quality life thanks to her companion and seeing-eye pig Lulu. Baby and Lulu had a loving relationship for eight years until the day her pig buddy died.
“She had been in a litter and she hadn’t been handled, so those first couple of weeks every time you touched her, she would squeal thinking you were going to hurt her,” Deb Devlin told The Dodo. “But she very quickly became very trusting and loyal.”
That’s because Lulu was introduced to Baby. The two animals who both came from a slaughterhouse hit it off right away.
Devlin said the sanctuary tried to pair Baby with other animals but she was only able to find her way with Lulu.
“[Baby] always knew where everything was, because of her,” Devlin said of Lulu.
Since their first meeting, they’ve been inseparable and spend morning to night together.
The pair was inseparable, from feeding time to their daily walks through the sanctuary. Unfortunately, after eight years of friendship, Lulu passed away. Baby was absolutely devastated and lost without Lulu.
“If she wasn’t eating, she was crying for her pig – moo-ing and going in circles, because she can’t walk far or else she’ll hit something,” Devlin said.
Thankfully, a new friend wasn’t far behind. A young calf had escaped from a local slaughterhouse repeatedly and eventually purchased and brought to DFUPU. The calf was put into a private pen to get used to her new surroundings but a few minutes later she had jumped the fence to go hang out with Baby.
And that was the beginning of another beautiful friendship.
“Baby never had any babies of her own, [but] she is so motherly to this calf,” Devlin said. “Baby … is blind, but if you start walking over, she knows you’re walking over. She’ll actually move right in front of the calf.”
While Lulu had been Baby’s protector, Baby now protects the new calf. It brought out an entirely new side in Baby.

DFPUP is holding a naming contest on their Facebook page to find a proper name for the calf. They are also getting a new fence.
“We plan on getting really strong fencing,” Devlin said. “I don’t think she’s going anywhere, but just in case.”
