Kim Jong-nam, the half-brother of North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un, has been killed at an airport in Malaysia by “poison needle-wielding” North Korean assassins, according to South Korean media.
Yonhap news stated Kim Jong-nam was killed in Kuala Lumpur on Monday morning after being jabbed by a poisoned needle by two women in the city’s airport. The women in question are thought to be North Korean agents dispatched by the State Security Department, North Korea’s secret police.
The hitwomen have managed to evade Malaysian police forces, and while Abdul Aziz Ali, (police chief for the Sepang district of Malaysia’s capital city), stated that the man’s identity was yet to be confirmed, he has been widely identified by South Korean media as Kim Jong-nam himself.
Kim Jong-nam worked for North Korea’s foreign ministry, and was once considered the heir apparent to former North Korean autocrat Kim Jong-il, who ruled with despotic authority over the totalitarian regime from 1994 to 2011.
Kim Jong-nam fell out of favour in 2001 after being arrested at Tokyo’s Narita Airport after trying to enter Japan on a forged Dominican Republic passport. Jong-nam told Japanese police that he had wanted to visit Disneyland with his family.
Exiled by his father, Jong-nam lived in Macau in China until Kim Jong-il died in late 2011, after which he went into hiding out of fear that his half-brother saw him as a threat to the legitimacy of his own regime. Seems as though his fears have been proven right.
“I expect Kim Jong-un summoned Kim Jong-nam back to Pyongyang and gave him a job as he is still relatively weak and feared that other factions might support Kim Jong-nam,” stated Toshimitsu Shigemura, a professor at Tokyo’s Waseda University “It is also possible that China is looking for an alternative North Korean leader and could have thrown their support behind another member of the Kim family.”
This killing is likely to incite even more international tension between the isolationist state and the rest of the world, and certain geopolitical experts have voiced fears that North Korea may even be planning a 9/11-style attack.
