Despite the argument many would make that society has made significant strides forward in the march to eradicate archaic attitudes toward the role of women in the workplace, and the old fashioned expectations of the sort of life a woman “should” lead, it is clear that there is still some way to go in securing a truly level playing field upon which women can work alongside their male counterparts without fear of ill-advised preconceptions or outdated perspectives forming a glass ceiling that they cannot shatter.
As a man, I have not experienced the frustrations and sense of injustice that must surely accompany such behaviour, though am fully aware of its regrettable prevalence in society. It is not uncommon to read examples online of women carrying out work on at least a par with their male colleagues, only to be overlooked or doubted based purely on their gender.
Now, to highlight the double-standards and downright sexism these women are dealing with everyday, female writers started a trend on Twitter – #ThingsOnlyWomenWritersHear, aiming to detail personal accounts of unfair treatment they have been subjected to in their chosen field.
The hashtag was successful, and soon become a “Twitter Moment”
