“Healthy” father of 8 unexpectedly dies in his sleep. This can happen to anyone!

By the time Cloe and James Green had given birth to their first son Levi, they were sure that they wanted a big family. Despite the pregnancy being a shock to the young couple, James was excited, smiling and saying that he had “always wanted to be a dad”.

Two years after Levi, Cloe gave birth to their second son Oliver. By the time Oliver was 6-weeks-old, she discovered she was expecting again. This time it would be a daughter whom they would name Megan, and the couple married shortly before her birth.

They worked hard to support their growing family – Cloe staying home to take care of the children, while James worked long hours in a café.  Cloe notes, “We had nothing to be ashamed of for wanting a big family, we didn’t claim any benefits.”

James loved being a dad, and it was no secret that he wanted more kids.

Eventually, Cloe would discover she was pregnant with their second daughter, Miley.

Miley was born with cerebral palsy, and as a result of her additional needs, the couple decided it may be a good time to stop adding to their already large brood. Cloe ultimately contacted her doctor and requested a contraceptive implant. However, the birth control failed, and the couple found themselves now expecting their sixth child, Lacey.

James believed that the failed contraceptive was a sign: They were supposed to have more children. Lexi followed Lacey, and in 2015, Cloe discovered she was pregnant once again. Liam, their eighth, would make the household a whopping ten-person home.

Following Liam’s birth, Cloe and James both agreed that their family finally felt complete.  It was a lot of work, but the young couple enjoyed every minute raising their children.

Cloe recalls, “Superdad James never stopped. He’d do the school run, then go to work at the café before picking the kids up… He’d sit and play games and read until bedtime. He had so much energy.”

Wanting to plan something fun for his older children, James organized a day trip to London scheduled for December 4th, 2015. Unfortunately, it would never come to fruition.

The night before the London trip, as the couple lay asleep in their bed, James bolted upright and stopped breathing.

Cloe remembers,“I wanted to scream and cry but knew I needed to keep calm”. She immediately called first responders, and she performed CPR as she waited for the paramedics to arrive. Unfortunately, James could not be saved.

His sudden death was ultimately attributed to hypertensive heart disease.

Hypertensive heart disease is an umbrella term, referring to heart failure, ischemic heart disease, hypertensive heart disease, and left ventricular hypertrophy. It is the main cause of death associated with high blood pressure. As humans, we are all guilty of the “it could never happen to me” mentality. However, according to CDC statistics, one in every three American adults is currently suffering from high blood pressure and only half of them have their condition under control.

All adults should get their blood pressure checked routinely. Even in seemingly health people like James, it can be the difference between life and death.

Cloe and her eight young children’s lives shifted upside down following James’ death, but Cloe knew she needed to stay strong for everyone. She says, “In my darkest moments I wondered how on Earth I would do this without James, I felt lost. But I had to do it. I love my brood so much. I know I can do a great job for them in my husband’s honor”.

It has now been 12 months since James’ death and Cloe continues to be the main source of support for her family. When the children feel sad about their father’s death, Cloe goes out of her way to do positive things to memorialize him.

She states, “My best memories are of James with the kids – he loved being a dad more than anything and has made me a strong enough parent to face this job alone.”
