Justin Trudeau is, in many ways, the antithesis of Donald Trump. A liberal politician who appeals strongly to a younger, socially conscious demographic, his forte appears to be policies and ideologies on pretty much the opposite side of the political spectrum to his United States counterpart, Donald Trump.
When the two met last month, much was made of the tightrope act that Trudeau would need to walk not to antagonise the 45th President of the United States, while remaining firm on issues that directly affected Canada.
“The first is, of course, to highlight Canadian values and principles and the things that keep our country strong,” Trudeau said of these issues in a statement prior to their meeting. “The second responsibility that I have… is creating jobs and opportunity for Canadian citizens through the continued close integration on both sides of the border.”
President Trump has made no secret of his views on abortion, indeed it was particularly early on in his presidency that he reinstated what has become known as the Global Gag Rule, a policy that was initially introduced by Ronald Reagan in 1984 which prevents United States funding being given to non-governmental organisations that engage in or give advice on issues of family planning and reproductive health, if those organisations include abortion as an option. This is relevant even if the money is not directly used for abortive practices.
An image of Trump signing the order, surrounded by male White House officials, had set the internet ablaze with comments and opinions. Many of them were centred on the notion that it was a group of men dictating what decisions women should make regarding their bodies.
Now, it appears that Justin Trudeau has taken measures to combat Trump’s polarising policy, after it was announced on Wednesday that the Canadian Prime Minister will be pledging $650 million over the next three years to support women’s reproductive health services and sexual education all over the world.
