Self-improvement is always difficult. It can be hard to find the motivation to make a lasting change, particularly if that means adjusting (or even eliminating) an integral part of your lifestyle. For example, I’ve always been a compulsive nail-biter. I know that it’s a gross habit, and it’s not good for me either, but every year I try to give it up, and every year I fail.
I’ll give it my best shot again this year, but I know that my willpower is so weak that I’ll inevitably just cave in and go back to it. It would take something really extreme and life-affecting to jolt me out of my apathy and convince me to permanently change my ways.
I think that one of the hardest things to do is to lose weight; ironically, it takes a lot of guts. Some people are lucky enough to be able to coast by thanks to their fast metabolism, while others have to count every calorie and consume minuscule portions in order to avoid putting on the pounds. The thing about gaining weight is that it’s a slippery slope, all it takes is an extra helping here, a sweet treat there, and before you know it, you’ve bloated.
That’s why, when people display the inner strength to actually lose weight, the transformation is so inspiring. It’s amazing to think that we all have the potential to completely change the way we look, reinventing ourselves and our bodies in the process. Sometimes, though, it can often take something pretty upsetting to motivate us to take the plunge, and really turn things around.
For one young man from Ireland named Dylan Condron, that change happened when a neighbour bought him a T-shirt, and he was shocked to see that it was an XXXXXXL shirt. That shock convinced Dylan to seriously hit the gym, where he worked out hard enough to shed an incredible 260 pounds.
