Even in the modern world, travelling by sea can still be a terrifying method of travel. Most other forms of transport seem nice and safe and cosy to us – we can travel in comfort by trains, planes and automobiles, and never feel so much as the jolt of a pothole or a minor bout of turbulence.
By sea however, it’s another story; one where it’s rarely plain sailing. If you’re like me – with poor sea legs, a temperamental stomach and a deep fear of the crushing depths of the ocean – a journey by boat is a horrifying experience. Pictures of colossal waves crashing against what look like tiny, fragile vessels don’t do much to ease my anxieties either.
So if you’ve got a fear of sailing on the high seas, then the following snapshots might make you feel pretty terrified. On the other hand, if you’re more of a nautical thrill seeker, then they will probably make you book a cabin and head straight for the front deck. Don’t forget your life ring though; the waters look a little choppy.
