During the presidential election, Donald Trump repeatedly refused to release his tax returns. This was unprecedented, with his refusal to release them breaking over 40 years of presidential tradition. Now, MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow has revealed Donald Trump’s tax returns from 2005.
Trump has often commented about his tax returns, and stated in October whilst at a campaign event, that: “I have brilliantly used those laws. I was able to use the tax laws of this country, and my business acumen, to dig out of the real estate mess — you would call it a depression — when few others were able to do what I did.”
According to Maddow, the tax return was sent to David Cay Johnston, a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist whose work specialised in economics and taxes. Johnston then analysed the documents, sent by an anonymous source. Although Johnston could not confirm who sent the documents, he believes it could have been the President himself: “It’s totally possible that Donald sent this to me. I feel I have to include that in the possibilities of where it came from.”
