Variety magazine has endorsed Hillary Clinton for president, marking the first time in more than 100 years that Hollywood’s oldest entertainment industry trade magazine has made a presidential endorsement.
Variety announced their endorsement of Clinton on Tuesday and joins a growing list of publications like The Atlantic and the conservative Arizona Republic newspaper that have made unprecedented or otherwise rare endorsements of the Democratic nominee this election season.
The magazine acknowledged it was unusual for a trade publication to make such an endorsement, but said this of all years was the one in which the editors-in-chief and Variety’s publisher, Michelle Sobrino-Stearns, felt moved to “buck tradition and take a public stance on this historic election.”
“We didn’t want to sit on the sidelines and come down on the wrong side of history,” the editors said, noting the presidential endorsement is the magazine’s first in its 111-year history.
Variety lauded many of the same qualities that have popped up in traditional newspaper endorsements of Clinton: her experience, her temperament and her record of public service.
When it comes to issues like diversity, inclusivity and freedom of speech that affect Variety’s industry ― encapsulated by discussions like #OscarsSoWhite ― Clinton inspires positive change, Variety said:
She has often talked about the strength of diversity in the American fabric, a topic that only recently has been given meaningful attention among studio chiefs, network heads, and industry organizations. We would expect her to continue this conversation from the bully pulpit of the presidency.
Despite the fact that Clinton’s Republican challenger, Donald Trump, actually hails from the entertainment industry, Hollywood has overwhelmingly thrown its support behind her.
As for Trump’s run, the magazine blasted his bid for president as nothing more than “a ploy to land another TV deal or launch a new cable channel so he can continue spewing his sexist, racist views.”
