Children are full of surprises. Despite their young age, they never fail to remind us adults to care about one another. Here’s a story about an eight-year-old boy who acted beyond his years by paying it forward to a soldier he had just met.
The story starts off with young Myles Eckert and his family going to eat at a Cracker Barrel restaurant. While in the restaurant’s parking lot, Myles found a $20 bill on the floor and couldn’t help but want to spend it on some new video games. Although the young 8-year-old wanted to buy video games, he changed his mind when he saw a soldier inside the restaurant.
What Myles wanted to do with the money was something selfless and full of love. He wrapped the $20 inside of a post-it note which carried his message to the soldier — Lt. Col. Frank Dailey, who was there dining with his family.
The child’s beautiful note read:
“Dear Soldier, my dad was a soldier. He’s in heaven now. I found this $20 in the parking lot when we got here. We like to pay it forward in my family. It’s your lucky day! Thank you for your service. Myles Eckert, a gold star kid.”
Upon reading the note, Dailey was overwhelmed with emotions.
It turns out, Eckert’s father — Army Sgt. Andy Eckert, was killed in Iraq just five weeks after Myles was born. The little child only knows his father through the memories of others and the items left behind — his father’s dog tags and wedding band.
Pictured below is a photo of Eckert’s father.
Dailey says the gift was much bigger than just a 20 dollar monetary value. He says he continues to look at Eckert’s green post-it note every day because it serves as a reminder for his “lifetime direction.”
The soldier hopes Eckert’s story will serve as a source of inspiration for people across the country to give and honor others.
Such a heartwarming story to read about because Myles lost someone so important to him, yet he is still full of love. A wonderful being inside and out. Bless his golden heart.
