The Movies is a business simulation game created by Lionhead Studios. It was released in 2005. The game allows players to take the role of a Hollywood film mogul, running a studio and creating films. Much has been made about the film-making aspect of the game, as it allows players to easily create viewable works or machinima.

In The Movies, players get the chance to run their own movie studio. The game can be divided into three main areas – designing the movie studio, forging the careers of film stars and making films. It is possible to focus on any of those areas that appeal most, and spend less time on the others. The game plays through from the birth of cinema to the present day and into the near future, with all the technology and historical advances that occur along that timeline. After the movies have been made, they can be played back for the viewer to watch. It is possible once the movie is made to add voice, text and music in post-production.

  1. Just finished watching your PlanCo Scenario series so thought I'd watch these next… Really brought back memories when I played this when it first came out. Loved the game back then. Thanks! Now where did I put that CD….

  2. Ahhhh yes, I have the distinct memory of making a custom horror script and planning out how I would edit and chop up the footage… then subsequently forgetting the movie editing and releasing it raw within the game. Good times. And I still have my copy so I'll see to getting it running on my Win10 machine.

  3. Even though I am getting worse and worse for spamming all the YouTubers I watch with super insightful comments of late (compliment spam, one might say?), just because you mentioned it, here specifically just for you, dear Mr Sparrow: thank you for a lovely, quirky and fun video of a game I've never even heard of before! I can't fault anything of it (well, the movie your studio made was a bit uhm, rubbish, but that's not your fault!) and I am looking forward to more Movies goodness, this looks like great fun and your commentary is smooth and great as always!
There, positive enough? Time for tea now… 🙂

  4. I have a question regarding directors: since actors can also direct, is there any need to actually create directors? Are directors actually better at directing? And I guess this applies in reverse too since directors can act.

  5. I'm happy to see someone else playing The Movies, however, I'm a bit disappointed you're in sandbox mode and not the actual game mode. Part of the fun is trying to win awards while all the prima-donna actors and actresses are dragging the studio down by getting drunk and throwing tantrums

  6. I love this game I have it and it's great lol I wish I could get it to work on my computer one of my things I would reference is always keep the scriptwriters just to get their experience up and same with the crew the extra could also be trained in the sets

  7. RIP Throwback Thursdays. You lived a good life and bought pleasure to many a person. But yay to more classic games on the channel! Been waiting for you to get this working for ages; got a notification about the live stream but didn't have chance to watch so thanks for starting a series from scratch!

  8. I played this game when it came out for hours and hours and hours. I loved it! I'm so happy you're playing it! I hope you'll slow down a bit later and write up some of the movies, perhaps asking for ideas from the Geekism Community.

With that spaceship set, you can create a franchise for a whole series. A homage to Star Trek. Perhaps you can call it Star Trip, Star Trip II, and Star Trip III. It can be about the escapades of the USS Jonty. It'll be great! I can see the merchandising now! And think of the reboot potential! lol
